Secretary-General of Bandung United Nations
Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and United Nations agenda.
The participants play the role as diplomats representing a nation of NGO in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or General Assembly. Participants make a research of represented country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to the world problems. More recently, simulation of other deliberative bodies, such as the United Nations Security Council, has been included in Model United Nations. In some Model United Nations, The participants that are considered to be the most contributing are given awards. We believe that practice can seek the best one in diplomacy without detracting the diplomacy experience itself. The purpose of MUN is to promote cooperative problem solving.
During the conference, participants must employ variety ways of communication and critical thinking skills in order to present the policies of their country. These skills include public speaking, group communication, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, reaching consensus, conflict resolution, note taking, and technical writing. Model United Nations groups are there to develop these skills and are usually organised as either a club, conference, or class. A conference is a school-wide, local, regional or international gathering of Model United Nations Students who come together over a period between one and five days.
We believe that Model UN teaches students much needed 21st century skills. Students learn how to research, write, speak, and negotiate. Students get the opportunity to lead their peers and organise large-scale conferences. These are skills that colleges look for and that employers value. But most importantly, these are skills that students will use throughout their lives as they grow into positions of leadership. We believe that the students who participate in MUN, one day will change the world.
